Recovering debts is time consuming and can be expensive. You have three options for collecting an unpaid debt: do it yourself, use a debt collection agency or work with a lawyer.
-
If the debt is small, we recommend that you try to recover a debt yourself, because it may not make sense to spend the money you recover from the debt in lawyer fees.
-
Using a debt collection agency can be a helpful. However, generally the agency will take a percentage of any money collected.
-
Your third choice to collect debt is working with a lawyer. A lawyer will first advise about your legal options. Thereafter he will draft a letter of demand which is structured in a way to enable you to take immediate legal action if the debt is not paid. A lawyer will also be able to assist if you need to recover the debt through litigation.
You should choose the debt collection option that is best suited to your circumstances. The right choice will generally depend on the amount of money you are owed and your chances of successfully recovering the debt.
